There is, as usual, a big move on to have Christians stay home from the November 5 election.

If they do, they won't be able to vote on constitutional amendments.

If they do, they won't be able to vote on pro-life and other initiatives.

If they do, they won't be able to vote for down-ballot candidates who are true conservatives.

In my city, we may be voting on a local-option proposal to extend the bar hours from midnight to 2 .am.

Whether or not Christians are for or against this, they need to vote, as we have a university here that will be voting as a bloc.

It is a shame that they have to stack up elections this way, but I can understand, since it is so much work for the county election administrators.

If you can't write in Alan's name in your state, at least don't vote in the presidential race and vote for the rest of the ballot.

Keep Alan's principles in mind as you vote, of course, and be an informed voter.

Thoughts on Lost Causes

The massive window of her kitchen overlooked San Francisco Bay and offered a commanding view of the city skyline. I watched the lights come on one by...

The massive window of her kitchen overlooked San Francisco Bay and offered a commanding view of the city skyline. I watched the lights come on one by one to the west, closer to the ocean. I took it to be Sausalito but what the deuce did I know. I barely knew the area.

Her Ipod sounded like a Starbucks. Acoustic rock like Greg Laswell would merge into Jonatha Brooke progressive folk only to be followed by a Vince Giuraldi piece from one of the Charlie Brown specials (but then Dr. Funk was the Bay's composer) and then off to Latin America for the smooth sounds of Pacificka only to be followed by the alternative band Gazelle. It was an odd procession of music which somehow disturbed what should have been a majestic sight of star after star piercing the blank outstretched canopy of a California sky and the sailboats heading to shore.

I let out a deep breath and watched ripples disturb the calm sea of coffee. It was a futile effort to cool my drink off. To be blunt, the West Coast stuff is too dark for this East Coast boy.

She came into the kitchen still toweling her hair. "What are you reading?" she asked. Her voice was cracking again. I know what she wanted to ask; why-why-can't you stay here a few more days.

As obscure as my reading may be, let it be said I am enough of a coward to prefer to talk about it instead of the snake under the table, the subject of us. I wake up and jog on the beach overlooking Atlantic every morning while you can smell the Pacific from her house.

"Eh, it's the first book of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. This part seems to focus on the Glorious Rebellion. I always had a soft spot for James and the Stuarts and Campbells."

She offered me a weak smile. On the first night of the conference, we had stolen off with a few others to a pub where a man with a guitar sang the old songs. The entire table was stunned that I knew the lines of "Bonnie Laddie, Highland Laddie."

"You have a thing for lost causes," she said.

I winced. I was not ready to talk about us and how tough it would be to make things work. "What do you mean?" I croaked.

"Why the hell are you backing Alan Keyes?" she demanded. We had already had that talk. Since I live in a purple state, she thinks I have an obligation to vote for McCain. "You know he has no chance."

I blew on my coffee as I put my thoughts together. "I need to look at myself in the mirror the next morning," I sighed.

"And voting for McCain won't let you do that?"

"No, no it wouldn't."

She waited for me to add more but I said nothing. "Why?" she finally asked out of exasperation.

"I don't trust McCain on judges."

"Come on, you agree that too many of our decisions are made by the Supreme Court. It's where democracy goes to die."

I chuckled. "All that is true. But here's the problem. At least W., for all his faults, named good judges to the bench, Alito and Roberts. And who knows what Harriet Meier stood for. I think McCain would not appoint conservatives to the bench."

"Well Bush 41 named Thomas..."

"He also named Souter," I pointed out. "And yes Reagan named Scalia but he also named O'Conner and Kennedy. I have no doubts that Keyes won't name judges to the bench who will 'grow' once they hold office."

She paused and looked as the city lights came on across the water. "Has that what our elections come down to?" she asked. "Who gets named to the bench?"

"Yes, I'm afraid so."

She went to the coffee pot and I went back to my book.

It's all about judges.

Thomas Jefferson, foe to judicial power, and Abraham Lincoln, who insisted the Constitution was not what Roger B. Taney said it was, would have wept.

An Old Farmer for Keyes

A hot Sunday afternoon in July. I watched the St. Johns flow past the orchard owned by Mr. Kirk, a farmer who has been growing oranges here for over five decades. On the other side of the creek, a slender woman walked by, apparently troubled by something. Our eyes met and mine expressed compassion and feeling or so I hope at least.

The hair on Mr. Kirk's head was freshly cut grass in a drought season; dry, short and dying. I made conversation to ward off the melancholy thoughts.

"Tell me, Mr. Kirk, which was better the old days or now?"

"It's better now, I reckon," he said slowly. "Things are a bit easier. We have made advances on race, health, technology. The young people though have no morals."

I nodded. So every generation has said about each generation to come after them. I fear that Mr. Kirk though has a very valid point. I know so. Just turn on the television or go to the mall if you doubt. Go substitute teach in a school as I did last year. It will break your heart and haunt those minutes that often seem like hours between when you close your eyes and when you go to sleep.

"The politicians have gotten worse too," he added as an afterthought as he looked to his trees. "I remember my father saying that the leaders of my generation would be bad and the ones of my children's would be even worse. I can only imagine what it will be like when people your age take the reins." I looked down; not trying to ponder over the many decades that divide us in age. I am in my early 30s yet I still feel like a child when I am with Mr. Kirk.

He looked down towards the river and folded his arms across his chest. "I think the descent from George Washington to George W. Bush is enough proof that Charles Darwin was full of baloney." He offered an almost toothless grin to me and added, "Now if we go and elect Alan Keyes, I may hold off my reservations on Darwin's theory."

I chuckled and watched the sun slowly start its descent.

My Independence Day Address Pt 2

When we give up our vote, we give up our voice. This really gets down to the point I would like to make in this whole article. Somebody needs to say...

When we give up our vote, we give up our voice. This really gets down to the point I would like to make in this whole article. Somebody needs to say something! We have remained silent far too long. I love our country. I thank the Lord each day that I live in America. But, because I love this nation so much, I do not want it to decline - or even worse - face the same judgment as Sodom. In the spirit of our fore fathers, Christians need to stand up. It seems as though we have lost our will to fight. We have lost our outrage.

Somebody needs to look at the world around us and say enough is enough! If Christians cannot do this, who will? Who are we waiting for? Or, are we just content to let this nation continue its slide into further depravity?

Yes, I understand that one day this world will perish. I understand that the mission of the Church is to not elect a candidate but to save souls. But may I remind you that as our liberties continue to diminish, our freedom to preach the gospel also diminishes? After World War II, Douglas McArthur asked missionaries to come to Japan as they would have a wonderful opportunity to witness there now. I can recall in my own time, which as the Iron Curtain came down in the Soviet Union, we were excited about the chance to send in missionaries. After the liberation of Iraq, many churches were quick to send in missionaries. Freedom of speech in other lands is an opportunity. But, can we then reason that as we loose our freedoms here, opportunities for gospel presentations may also diminish? Would you rather preach in a free nation or in a “closed” nation?

Speaking of missions, what about the support we send to those on the field each month? I have a friend who is a missionary in Australia. He finds himself in the odd position of losing much of his missionary support. No church has stopped giving to him, and no church has reduced the amount they are sending. Why is he loosing support then? The dollar just is not what it used to be. When we send him our dollars, they must first be exchanged. As the dollar continues to lose value, my missionary friend receives less support through the exchange rate. You see, the economy here in America has an effect on the foreign missionaries your church supports.

All of these issues are important. In life, there is no division of secular and sacred. God is sovereign over all areas of life, not just in church-related matters. As Christians, we must take our stand, yes, even in the political arena. John the Baptist was not afraid of preaching against Herod’s adultery, apparently no one told him to separate his religious views from his politic views.

Christians, take this Independence Day to reflect on what the Lord has called you to do for our nation. Not everyone will be a preacher. Not everyone will be a politician. But everyone can make their voice known. Yes, share the gospel with every creature. Yes, do not be afraid to engage the culture around us! Part of the gospel message is the recognition of sin. Do not be afraid to point out the evils of our society, even if it means getting a little political.

By the way, do not let anyone fool you into thinking we cannot win in the political arena. I hear all the time that no matter what we do, Christians cannot win. Did you know that Christians ar the only people who think they cannot win. If Christians are not a true political force, than why does the media talk about the "Christian Right?" If Christians cannot make a difference, then why is Barak Obama openly courting evangelicals? Why John McCain trying to seem like more of a conservative? Again, Christians are the only ones who think they cannot win.

We all admire our Founding Fathers, especially on occasions such as this. We often cherish them not merely as statesmen, but as strong Christians with a great love of God. We love to talk about our Christian heritage here in America. But why do Christians cherish spirituality in 1776 and refuse to demand the same in 2008? We had no problem in 1776 with mixing faith and politics, but in our modern day Christians discount the idea altogether.

Christian, stand up and be counted. Do not allow your voice to be silenced! That it true legacy of our Founding Fathers.

Let me take the time to wish you all a very happy Independence Day. I often joke around with my wife Jill that leaving here in the Boston area leaves me feeling “historically enriched.” Standing on the Lexington Green battlefield and Concord’s North Bridge, do certainly do cause me to reminisce about those brave men of years gone by who gave their lives for the freedoms we now take for granted.

But I fear we have done just that, we have come to take our freedoms for granted. The past few weeks, Jill and I have both been enjoying the HBO documentary on the life of John Adams (based on the David McCullough book). At the same time, I have been reading through the Freedom Documents, a collection of patriotic, historic and stirring writings compiled by Pastor Chuck Baldwin (who also happens to be the Constitution Party Presidential Nominee). I have come to the overwhelming conclusion that people just don’t think this way anymore. We don’t think about freedom or liberty anymore. We just assume we have it, even as we watch them slowly disappear. Let me give you a few examples:

According to the National Right to Life, we have seen the execution of 48,589,993 unborn children since the infamous Roe V. Wade decision. We allow millions on innocent children to be murdered every year, and we simply call it a choice. Even though our Constitution recognizes the right to life and our Declaration of Independence refers to this right as unalienable, self-evident and given by God, our Supreme Court, our Congress, and politicians throughout the land callously ignore the screams of the dying. We care about human rights violations in Darfur and China, but not about our own right to life here in our own nation. And worst of all, we Christians who know the truth, have lost our sense of outrage at this heinous crime. We have grown desensitized and have accepted abortion as a fact of life. In the political realm, we have lost the desire to make this even an issue. After all, we don’t want to be known as one-issue voters. How sad…

What about taxes? On our anniversary, Jill and I had the opportunity to take cruise around Boston Harbor. We went right be the sight where many years ago brave patriots had staged the Boston Tea Party – a protest over the tax on tea and other related issues. In our modern time, we have a much greater tax burden than the British government had ever dreamed of imposing upon the Colonies, yet we cannot even muster a whimper about it. We now find ourselves in the position of having to report to Washington every dime of every dollar we earn, and exactly from where and how we earned it. And if we make the slightest mistake, the government will throw us in jail or tax us again with heavy fines. Apparently “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures” does not apply to taxes and tax forms. But again, where is the outrage? Why are people not shouting from the rooftops? We have ceased to care.

Back in the days of our Founding Fathers, the prevailing thought was that in order for the people to enjoy liberty and freedom, their government must be small, limited and carefully watched. Today, our federal government is a bloated bureaucracy that is utterly out of control. We all complain about this, yet at the same time, we expect our government to feed us, cloth us, and provide us with health care. If we fail to manage our money correctly, we expect the federal government to give us social security and take care of us completely in our old age. We have grown completely dependant upon Washington to meet even our most basic of needs. We have forgotten the words of Jefferson, “A government large enough to give you everything is a government large enough to take it all away.”

Even our right to vote is being taken away by the judiciary out of control. The judiciary was intended merely to interpret the law, not to make it. Separation of powers is one of the bedrocks of the Constitution. Yet, we see today that just the opposite is true. What cannot be accomplished through the ballot box is done through the court system. Homosexual marriage is now legal in Massachusetts and California - not through enacted law from their state legislatures or by vote of the people, but through the courts. Here in Massachusetts, our governor (Deval Patrick) begged state legislators not to allow the people to vote, though thousands signed a petition to do just that. Patrick knew the will of the people and purposefully and deceitfully persuaded lawmakers to ignore it and contradict it. He simply did not want the people to have their say or their vote.

But then again, I don’t understand why Deval Patrick was even worried. After all, Christians cannot be counted on to vote as Christians anyway. Countless times I have been told that Christians must not infuse their faith into the political system. Of course, we then go on to complain about how corrupt the political system is. How can it be anything but corrupt if there is no Godly presence! Many Christians want to divorce their faith entirely from the way they vote. This is how someone like Pat Robertson can endorse Rudy Giuliani who supports the right of women to murder their unborn children. We refuse to vote for anyone without an “R” beside their name, no matter what their stance. When I ran for Congress last year, I was the ONLY pro-life candidate in the race. However, very few people who AGREED with my views would support me. Why? They would not support me because I was the Constitution Party nominee, not the Republican Party nominee who was pro-death (i.e. “pro-choice”). Their reasoning was clear – the Democrat was too dangerous to elect, so we will go with the lesser of two evils (even though there was a third choice whose views we could support). Christians have sent the Republican Party a clear message – We will vote for whoever you nominate no matter what his views may be. Do you really think this will encourage the GOP (or anyone else) to raise up candidates with clear moral stances?

I was at such a dinner last night and was baffled to see a name next to me but no chair. How odd, I thought, there certainly were other chairs in the next room that could have been used.

Soon enough I discovered the reason why. A young woman in a wheelchair ended up next to me. After ten minutes we could not stand each other. What do you do....uh huh....how long have you lived in Jacksonville....really how interesting...so you work at a college...no I don't like baseball...you actually read him....and of course, after insulting where I worked, my teams, my hometown and even my favorite bbq place, she started gushing about the Socialist candidate for the White House.

My face always gives me away. It's why I no longer play poker. Needless to say, she picked up on my disgust at once.

"What, don't tell me you're for McCain?" she demanded. Apparently liking sports and Norman Mailer's books means I am a Republican.

"Well no..."

"Oh, so you're for Obama?"

"No...I'm for..."

"Oh don't tell me Bob Barr," she snapped. "For a third party candidate, he really shows a lack of principles."

"No, I'm not for Barr," I said. I went to help her with a plate being passed around the table but she gruffly did it on her own; a defiant show of independence. Her shirt grew untucked and, after seeing a bit of her navel, I looked down feeling oddly guilty.

"So you're for Nader," she said when she turned her attention back to me.

"No, I'm not for Nader."

"Then who do you plan to vote for?"

"I'm voting for Alan Keyes," I said and winced, waiting for the barrage of insults or at least comments about wasting my vote.

"Oh Keyes..." She blinked. There was recognition in her voice and a stunning lack of hostility. I was surprised to say the least.

"I respect Keyes," she said. "I wouldn't vote for him in a million years but he and Gary Bauer, maybe Richard Lugar, are some of the few Republicans I can respect."

"And why's that?" I asked.

"Keyes says what he believes and that's missing in our politics." She adjusted her legs. "Don't get me wrong, I think he is a windbag and he treated his daughter miserably-but I like him for one thing which redeems everything else." I moved in to listen. "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female, for you are one in Christ Jesus." It took me a moment to recognize the words of St. Paul to the Galatians. I was stunned that this young socialist, who had a Star of David on her necklace, knew those words. She looked at me and once again read my face only too well. "A supporter of state mandated abortion would have the likes of me bumped off before anybody else." She returned to her wine. "Yes, I think I would be more likely to vote for Alan Keyes than any of the candidates save Brian Moore and Ralph Nader."

"Well it looks like you can write Dr. Keyes in come November."

"I'll think about it but I think I;m sticking with Moore."

I offered her a weak smile until I realized that Moore was the Socialist nominee and left it at that. Not a complete victory but every now and then you get the pot with a pair of deuces.

Urgent call to prayer

Brothers and sisters, the situation in California is grave.

There is a big chance that we will be tempted to spend funds that should be used in the campaign for useless litigation--useless because California courts are notoriously liberal and in the case of conservative groups might pick the one most likely to lose. Add to this attorneys who will use delaying tactics to block our progress.

Now is the time for concentrated, focused prayer. Now is the time to cleanse our hearts and hands, to "check our egos at the door" as we approach the throne of God--praying with one voice.

We must search our hearts and minds, folks, because the wrangling that we have been doing on the discussion board (and sometimes during the conference calls) has got to stop if we want to make it even to the outer court.

Some of us may fast; others can't because of physical concerns of various kinds. But all of us can fast our time, the time we would spend on worldly and passing things, to spend it in prayer for our revival.

The strategy we use in our prayer at this time should be to address our pleas to the great Advocate of our souls, and to ask Him to bring us an under-advocate, an attorney who is His choice to lead this fight.

He has already chosen this person, a person of standing who believes in our cause and is willing to sacrifice to make it come to fruition.

We must thank him for this constantly, as we beg our Savior that the relationship may be brought into manifestation on earth that is already formed in heaven.

We must ask that the Holy Spirit give this person no peace, until he comes "out of the woodwork" and agrees to lead us in this charge against the forces of darkness.

We must not let it happen as it did in Iowa, when we had no legal help and our votes wound up in the trash with no challenge. We cannot do this to our California voters as well, many of them voting for the first time.

There are many spirits of darkness guarding the state of California--spirits of materialism, lust, and just plain deviltry. We must ask Jesus not only to send us a human advocate, but to send advocating spirits, angels who will fight these demons who rear their heads anytime anyone starts messing with their little playground.

I pray that my brothers and sisters in this campaign will join with me to pray these things
IN JESUS' NAME.

The Irony of National Review

I spent Sunday night in a nice Spanish restaurant in the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine, with some old friends and one of the driest bottles of white I have had in a long time. It as not as dry as a sherry or an amontillado but it was still dry and made us drink way too much water at dinner.

We talked about college football. One of my friends is a huge Florida Gator fan and I asked him what he thought of Steve Spurrier now coaching at the University of South Carolina. He groaned and said that there was nothing worse than a hero who turned his back on the cause.

I was thinking about that conversation last night as I sat in my easy chair, flipping through magazines as I watched my Marlins steal one from the Nats in the bottom of the 10th.

When I was in high school, no magazine influenced me as much as National Review (well maybe sports magazines did). The magazine was funny and insightful and true to its convictions which represented a lot of the best of American conservatism.

Alas, the magazine has fallen. It has an interesting cover story in the newest edition on why McCain should not pick the likes of Lieberman, Ridge, Crist and Huckabee for the VP spot.

http://nrd.nationalreview.com/?q=MjAwODA3MTQ=

The article argues that none of them are true conservatives and can not be trusted to limit the size of government or appoint traditionalist judges. Nor, with the exception of Huckabee, are any of them good on social issues.

The article was spot on. But, as I read the article and watched the Marlins, a question arose in my mind. Why is National Review up in arms about potential VPs on these issues when they have no problem backing John McCain who is awful on limiting government, awful on judges (como se dice "Gang of 14"?) and bad on social issues? If not as bad as Lieberman and Ridge, McCain is certainly no worse than Crist and much worse than the Huckster. Let's call McCain what he is; the most liberal Republican presidential candidate since Wilkie back in 1940.

The National Review is no longer what it used to be. It is Pravda; merely repeating the Grand Old Partyline.

Of course there is someone who can be trusted by conservatives on shrinking the federal government; who would appoint strict constituionalists to the bench; and would stand for traditional values on social issues including marriage and life. But party trumps patriotism and so the National Review, like so many New York and Beltway conservatives, ignores Dr. Keyes.

It's too bad when heroes turn their backs on what they believe....

:( Six weeks ago I walked into an office and asked the 3 people in the room, "Will you help me get Alan Keyes elected to the presidency?" They asked me, the anger obvious in their voices, "Marvin, why should we waste our votes?" I try to be civil with everyone, but I couldn't resist. I laughed out loud.

As I often do when I am frustrated, I went home and started writing. During the next week I wrote a 100 page book titled, DON'T WASTE YOUR VOTE: The Case For an Independent President, Alan Keyes. I wrote about why Barack Obama, John McCain and Ron Paul are all walking disaster areas, and why Alan Keyes makes so much sense in the absence of any sense at all.

I didn't write the book to make money, but (pardon the drama but I believe this with every fiber of my being) to save America. Please do America a favor, and go and read my book today. Download it for free at www.kingjesusradio.com.

After you read the Book, call in to my radio show on the internet, weekdays at 5pm CT. You can link to the show @ www.kingjesusradio.com on the RADIO Page.

See you on the show! Crazy marvin

Anyway, go ahead and comment, as I can still read your posts. And if he shows up here, bro and sis, sic 'em, with all your geekly talents!
